Stop SB 333

What is SB 333?
It’s a Virginia bill introduced by Charles W. Carrico that, if passed, would restrict all mopeds and scooters in Virginia to roads with a 35mph speed limit or lower.

What?! That’s terrible!
Yes, it is. If you ride a moped or scooter in Richmond, you know that if this law was enforced it would be near impossible to get anywhere  around town.

Where does it stand now?
As of now the bill has been continued to 2013. So for 2012 we’re safe, but as for next year we’ll have to just wait and see. Hopefully they can hear us out and put a stop to it.

What can I do to stop it?
You can track the bill’s progress here. At this point, it’s been referred to the Committee on Transportation so emailing the members on this committee and telling them you do not want the bill to pass is probably the best form of action right now. So please read the rest of this page and show them the moped community does not want this law enforced!

What should I say?
You need to at least include your name, address, and a reason for why the bill should not be passed. Probably something like this:

Hello. My name is [full name here] and I ride a moped almost everyday. My address is [address here]. If SB 333 is passed it will be near impossible for me to get from place to place and would defeat the purpose of me having a moped as well as the fuel economy that I originally bought it for. Please DO NOT pass this bill, or at least the least change the minimum speed limit to 45mph and not 35mph. I find it unfair that if this bill is passed, bicycles will be able to ride on roads that I would not be able to. I am a safe driver and I feel safe on my moped on 45mph roads, please do not restrict my riding because of other careless riders and drivers. Thank you.
